It took three days, but I finally completed full hive inspections from all the yards today, rotated out some old equipment for new, gathered the extra honey frames together to feed splits, and finally have an accounting of all of the colonies post winter into spring build up. A number of the overwintered colonies are just really getting rolling and a few have already received their first honey supers. Our total losses sit at 38%. That includes the initial 35% hit we took when I culled down going into fall with the absentee fall flow and queens shutting down before building a winter nest. Crazy year! A couple of queens failed to start up again. I cracked the lid on one today to witness them balling their queen. Brutal! There is a lot of talk of doom and gloom for the 2025 season, but all colonies I inspected are bringing in pollen and nectar and building comb, so I’m going to keep a cautiously positive outlook. A 50°F day today allowed us to crack the lids on the colonies in several yards. So far it has been better than I anticipated. Not nearly as strong as they’ve been this time the last couple years but of those surviving, the girls are building and moving in the right direction. Some colonies were ready for reverses, some had barely moved into their honey stores. All got some housekeeping (cleaned bottom boards, tightened up honey frames around the cluster, etc) and a pollen patty. We’ve got a couple more nice days this week that will allow us to visit the remaining colonies and get everyone set for the winter to spring transition. I’m definitely ready to have last season behind us and see the blooms of spring. Happy Beekeeping y’all! 🐝

Catching up on a lot of work on this snowy Sunday in February. I’ve been going over my various notes from previous years and comparing them to what we saw last year in terms of colony health, mites, production, weather and many other factors. Last year was not a great year for the bees overall - not just in terms of honey production, which was about average, but more in terms of the obvious stress the colonies were under. Drought of course was the major factor for us. But it can’t explain everything. Commercial beekeepers are experiencing catastrophic losses this winter. The concern for us small guys is how much of that is a big operation thing that will be ferreted out as the industry does their investigations and studies and how much of that is environmental or epidemiological that will affect our backyard bees, as well. Many times we don’t see near the degree of effect Commercial keepers do because our bees are not exposed to the same stresses of those operations. Not better or worse, just different. I culled hard in the fall because of the warning signs I was seeing going into winter so our loss count starts there at about 30%. So far I’ve not seen losses out of the ordinary with our remaining colonies but there is still several weeks of winter left that are usually the toughest on our bees here in NW Indiana. What I am most concerned with now is how the colonies start back up - if they start back up at all. Queens were shutting down super early last year. It is one of the things that has me pouring over my notes and looking for studies and information on the subject.
